Oppo: A place of opportunity

Millions of migrants entered Europe in the last two years, highlighting one of the toughest challenges that cities around the world will face for decades to come: In an era of great uncertainty, how and where can people find opportunity?
Malmö is an ideal place to explore innovative ideas to improve social inclusion and access to economic opportunity. It is a gateway city to Scandinavia, and the point of arrival for the vast majority of refugees and asylum seekers settling in Sweden.

Opportunity Space was
an international design-build competition to create a temporary mobile structure that will foster economic opportunity and social inclusion in Malmö. The project aimed at establishing a replicable process for engaging diverse stakeholders to design more economically and socially sustainable neighborhoods.

TSPA proposal, Oppo, is an inflatable, helium filled balloon of translucent polyurethane in the shape of a torus. During the day, when events take place, is held on the ground, during the night it flies and glows in the dark.
Oppo attracts neighbours, migrants and visitors, encouraging interaction between these groups. Hovering above the ground vertically or horizontally and changing location, it can perfectly accommodate various events: workshops and language classes for smaller groups as well as lectures or concerts for crowds.
