For the last 8 years, Moscow Urban Forum was gathering experts from various fields and countries to discuss the most prominent issues our cities are facing. Questions, such as what is a smart city, how cities can become even more inclusive and resilient, or how do we cope with digitalization in planning and everyday life?

In the summer of 2018, TSPA was invited to support MUF in the topic about „MEGAPOLIS OF THE FUTURE. NEW SPACE FOR LIVING“. We were honored to be the main partners of the event, among internationally recognized organizations like OECD and PWC.

Additionally to the partner role, TSPA participated in the round table discussion about successful urban and real estate development practices.

A Masterplan won’t solve anything

Russian cities usually have a functioning city administration, often a strong civil society, and s strong framework of urban regulations. Yet, when we look at the current state of the urban environment, they are very much the opposite of an attractive, liveable city.

Thomas of TSPA and Anton Shatalov of Proektdevelopment, a young innovative office which forms part of the fledgling Siberian urban design scene, explore this question using Krasnoyarsk as an example. The conversation was hosted by gorodprima. Read the full dialogue (in Russian) here: „A Masterplan won’t solve anything„.

TSPA at Krasnoyarsk Conference in Moscow Urban Forum

Krasnoyarsk is the easternmost city in Russia with a population of over one million. Being the economic center of a giant multinational and multicultural region that covers a land area eight times larger than Germany – but with a population of only 3 million – the city faces spatial, cultural and economic challenges which require an overhaul its urban development strategies. Krasnoyarsk will also host the Universiade in 2017, which will serve as a catalyst for urban renewal.

Consequently, Moscow Urban Forum organised a conference in Krasnoyarsk „Cities and territories tomorrow: Tools for positive change“ to discuss how Krasnoyarsk’s transformation can be enabled in the coming decades.

Thomas Stellmach, director of TSPA, was invited as foreign expert together with Markus Appenzeller of MLA+ to discuss potential approaches for change together with Russian colleagues and experts.
