Approaches to Integrated Urban Development

Release of explanatory videos as part of the research initiative. Part IV

Why is cross-sectoral coordination of all urban domains essential to achieving resilient and sustainable urban development?

This question is at the heart of the German-American Cities network, a research initiative led by the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs, and Spatial Development (BBSR). As a research partner to the BBSR, we’ve worked together to create a series of explanatory videos that explore real-world planning instruments for higher density, mixed-use and affordable housing from the six participating cities.

Our latest video (from explanatory videos series developed for the Density and Mix-Use project), called Role of integrated urban development delves into how cities in Germany and the U.S. are embracing a holistic approach to urban planning. By integrating diverse aspects of city development, including housing, transportation, public spaces, social and economic structures, and climate-change policies, these cities are shaping more sustainable futures.

In Berlin, the Buch am Sandhaus living lab showcases how the Integrated Urban Development Concept is  helping the city balance growth, infrastructure, and social well-being.

In Seattle, comprehensive planning is shaping 15-minute neighborhoods, making cities more accessible, affordable, and accessible for all residents.

Explore how these cities are transforming urban development to address future challenges!
