Thomas and Bella travelled to the west of Mozambique to establish the project baseline with the team of Vocação Técnica. There, we visited the Tete Province - its diverse landscapes, rich biodiversity, and evolving infrastructure, while exploring the realities of urban planning on the ground.

Map of the project site and key focus settlements

Over the past 50 years, Tete Province’s population has grown from 50,000 to 500,000, with continued steady growth on the horizon. Now is the right moment to shape this development with foresight—preventing unplanned sprawl, and improving livelihood of the inhabitants while preserving the region’s cultural and ecological heritage and identity.

In a participatory mapping workshop, we worked with local officials to identify risks, vulnerabilities, and opportunities—gathering key insights on wildlife corridors, erosion risks, expansion areas, and infrastructure gaps. These findings will shape our planning approach, ensuring human settlements and wildlife thrive together.
