Approaches to Participation and Cooperation

Release of explanatory videos as part of the research initiative. Part III

Which methods of public participation are proving most effective in creating resilient and sustainable urban developments ?

This question is at the heart of the German-American Cities network, a research initiative led by the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs, and Spatial Development (BBSR). As a research partner to the BBSR, with Stefan Heinig, we’ve worked together to create a series of explanatory videos that explore real-world planning instruments for higher density, mixed-use and affordable housing from the six participating cities.

In the Implementing Projects Together explanatory video, from the series Mixed Use and Density, we dive into how cities in Germany and the U.S. are using public participation to shape the future of urban development. Meanwhile in Frankfurt, citizens' councils are driving change through the Post-Corona Inner-City project, giving residents a platform to influence the future of their communities. In St. Louis, neighborhood planning councils are integrating local insights into urban development, ensuring the community’s voice is heard in every step of the process.

Check out which methods the four living labs are using, to build more resilient, connected, and inclusive communities. For more information and a full video, please check out the BBSR project page, and stay tuned for more to come!
