Krasnoyarsk is the easternmost city in Russia with a population exceeding one million. As the economic center of a vast, multinational, and multicultural region—spanning a land area eight times larger than Germany but with only three million inhabitants—the city faces significant spatial, cultural, and economic challenges. These challenges demand a fundamental overhaul of its urban development strategies.

The upcoming 2017 Universiade will act as a catalyst for urban renewal, offering a timely opportunity to rethink the city’s future.

A Forum for Urban Transformation

In response, the Moscow Urban Forum organized a conference in Krasnoyarsk titled
“Cities and Territories Tomorrow: Tools for Positive Change”,
bringing together experts to discuss how the transformation of Krasnoyarsk can be supported over the coming decades.

International Expertise and Dialogue

Thomas Stellmach, director of TSPA, was invited as an international expert, alongside Markus Appenzeller of MLA+. Together with Russian colleagues, they explored potential strategic approaches for positive urban change. The conference took place on Thursday, October 27, in Krasnoyarsk.
